Ovarian Cysts

Not all ovarian cysts need a surgical intervention (this is usually required if there are concerns about the cyst morphology or the cyst is greater than 5cm). In premenstrual women cysts are very common and usually go away on their own. Ovarian cysts can be monitored in clinic to ensure their resolution.

In post-menopausal women if the ovarian cyst in <5cm and does not have suspicious features, a period of monitoring over a year is recommended with 3 sperate ultrasound scans. If it remains unchanged over this time, then intervention would not necessarily be required.
If of course in any case the ovarian cyst is causing you pain or other symptoms then ovarian cystectomy / oophorectomy can be discussed.
