Cervical assessment / Colposcopy

Miss Tipples is accredited by the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) to perform a thorough assessment of the cervix and treatment as deemed necessary. If you have a problem with the cervix, it is a good idea to ensure that the professional treating you holds this qualification.

BSCCP | Accredited Colposcopists

If a smear test has shown an abnormality you will need to have a colposcopy, and this can be performed at your convenience at the Nuffield by Miss Tipples. A colposcopy takes around 15-20 minutes. A speculum is inserted into the vagina and Miss Tipples will apply different liquids on to the cervix using cotton wool balls, this helps her to see any abnormal cells using a microscope.

If required, a biopsy (the size of a pin head) will be removed and sent for further testing. If the liquids show a significant abnormality Miss Tipples may recommend removing them. This can sometimes be on the same day, or it may be recommended to wait for the biopsy result and come back for another appointment. If abnormal cells do need to be removed, then Miss Tipples can perform a LLETZ procedure (large loop excision of the transformation zone).

This involves having an injection of local anaesthetic to numb the cervix. A heated loop of wire is then used to remove the tissue. An area of tissue about the size of a fingernail is removed. You will be able to drive and go home after the treatment is finished.
