If you notice a lump / bulge / discomfort in the vagina, it may be because of prolapse. Miss Tipples can offer a thorough assessment of the vagina and pelvic floor and recommend a plan of treatment or care.
When you come for your appointment, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and lie back on an examination chair. A speculum will be inserted into the vagina and the prolapse assessed.
If the prolapse is mild and not particularly bothersome you may not need any surgical / medical intervention. Ways to manage and improve the prolapse will be discussed and onward to referral to recommended women’s physio can be arranged if required.
If the prolapse is moderate – severe one way of managing this (and avoiding surgery) is the use of a pessary. Our pessaries are made of silicone, and we have many different shapes and sizes at our disposal. Sometimes you may need to try a few different types before we find the best one that works for you. The pessary will need to be removed, washed and replaced regularly depending on the type used. Miss Tipples can do this for you, or this can be done by the practice nurse (or Miss Tipples can teach you how to self-care for your pessary, if desired).
If you do not like the sound of a pessary or the prolapse is severe surgery may be an option, which is discussed in further detail on the surgery tab.
