Fibroid Removal

Surgical treatment may not always be necessary if you do not have symptoms, or your symptoms are controlled by medications. However, surgical treatment of fibroids depends on the size, number and location of the fibroids.

Hysterectomy (usually abdominal) is recommended in large fibroids and you do not wish to have children. An open myomectomy can be considered in women who wish to keep their fertility and there is usually just one large fibroid that is in a position for the surgery to be possible.

A hysteroscopic resection can be used when the fibroid is within the endometrial cavity (sub-mucosal fibroid). A hysteroscope with resectoscope attached is inserted through the cervix and the fibroid is cut away in small pieces. It is sometimes required to have this procedure performed over two surgeries.
